Why your childhood calling still lives inside you – and how to safely revisit it as an adult.
Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were little? Not in that vague “I don’t know, something creative” way. I mean truly — when no one was watching, when the world felt wide open.
Did you want to be a painter? A dancer? A scientist? A writer?
Did you dream of starting your own thing, or helping people, or creating something beautiful and brave? And do you also remember the moment it stopped feeling possible?

When the Dream Was Buried
Maybe someone laughed when you said it out loud. Maybe an adult told you: “You can’t make money doing that.” Or: “That’s not realistic.”
Maybe you were praised for being “sensible” and “smart” instead – and slowly started choosing the safer road, even though it didn’t feel like your road.
None of this happened because your dream was wrong. Or because you were not cut out for it. That’s the beauty of a childhood dream: It is your true calling. Why else would you be so eager to do it, as a child?
It happened because someone, somewhere, believed risk equals danger. And that belief trickled down to you.
And here’s the thing: It might still be quietly running in your system, even now.
You Still Want It — But Something Freezes
Every now and then, we do have those little nudges again. The silent “What if I tried?”. But every time you think of actually doing it, something inside pulls the brakes.
That voice again: “Who do you think you are?
It’s too late.
There’s no time for that now.
This is stupid.”
This is not weakness. It’s protection.
But it’s outdated protection – and it’s likely coming from a time when your nervous system couldn’t tell the difference between failure and actual danger.
The Brain + Body Behind This
The brain doesn’t care about your joy. It cares about survival.
(Read this again. It’s changed so much for me, understanding this).
And if dreaming big once got linked with shame, rejection, ridicule — your body still remembers. Unhealed, this fear lives as resistance, procrastination, “perfectionism,” or burnout.
You might say things like:
✖️ “I’m just not ready.”
✖️ “I need more clarity.”
✖️ “Once I fix XYZ, then I’ll start.”
But underneath is a very old imprint:
⚠️ “Pursuing what I really want is unsafe.”
This Is Where EFT Comes In
Subconscious beliefs are a tricky little business. The most powerful thoughts are often buried so deep that we don’t even know we’re carrying them. We dismiss our dreams by repeating a thought pattern that was never ours to begin with.
Luckily, we’ve got a tool for this though. Through tapping, we calm the nervous system while exploring the thoughts that hold us back.
Thoughts like:
- “It’s selfish to want more.”
- “I’m not cut out for this.”
- “If I try and fail, I won’t survive it.”
Through tapping, we override them.
The intensity softens.
The fear loosens its grip.
And the truth gets clearer: You’re allowed to want this. You’re allowed to try.
And “what if I try” won’t lead to a frightening answer anymore. “What if you try?”, well, you’re quite literally here to try!
You Don’t Have to Quit Your Job
Oh and here’s a cute little detail that those Hollywood-going-for-the-dream-only-getting-one-shot-this-is-it-movies don’t tell you: Reclaiming your dream doesn’t mean you have to blow up your life. In fact, the opposite is true. You just add more to your life. More life. More you.
In fact, let’s reframe this whole “going for your dream” thing a little bit. Our nervous system hates that. ‘Going for’ means getting up and leaving, can we start smaller? Can we open up to the possibility that our dreams are silently waiting for us any minute? And we don’t need to “go for” them. We just need to ease into what we already are.
It can start small — like sketching again. Signing up for the class. Making that call. Speaking your desire out loud.
But the moment you stop suppressing your longing, something incredible happens:
✨ You remember who you were.
✨ You get back in touch with possibility.
✨ You show your nervous system: We’re safe to dream again.
How does it feel, reading this? A bit of a “mhm. Not yet though”? Yeah, I know. Let’s tap on that though. Because — why not yet, though?
A Gentle Reframe
Your dream didn’t lie to you. And it didn’t disappear either.
It just went quiet.
It waited until you had enough safety in your system to hold it again.
And now? Maybe you’re ready to listen.
